A new terror has appeared off the coast of Sydney, Australia — massive, violent, and without warning. Fishing boats are being ripped apart. Crews are vanishing beneath churning black water. At first, authorities blame sharks. Then whales. Then tragic accidents at sea. But the wreckage tells a different story. Hulls are shredded from below. Survivors speak of spiked backs and glowing eyes moving beneath their vessels.

Blake, LG, David, and Riese — the newly formed Kaiju Task Force — are deployed to track the creature, uncover where it came from, and determine how to stop it before Sydney Harbor becomes a feeding ground. What begins as a reconnaissance mission quickly turns into something darker as they will face their biggest blow that will change the team forever.

I really enjoy a good monster movie and this book had all the best elements from one.

Despite being the start of a new series in a reestablished world I didn't feel at a disadvantage at this being my first instalment of the world, key links between characters were highlighted but not in a way that made me feel excluded, it was enough to show the strength of the friendships and hint at deeper connections from a shared past.

The kaiju at the heart of the story was described in such a way that it came across as a genuinely creepy monster and not the familiar type we know such as Godzilla. The menace from it's presence was felt throughout the story from scenes it was directly in, the underwater cave encounter was beyond unnerving, to just knowing it was in the background, somewhere beneath that dark water.

I loved the visuals of the mecha suits the guys wore (I had the gypsy rose theme playing in my head that whole time) I liked the feel of a similar system but shrunk down to fit the individual.

I really enjoyed this book, it felt like a great monster movie/tv series. The pacing of the story and the arc of the narrative suited its visual style of story telling. I look forward to book 2 in this new series.

I really enjoyed the narrator too, felt like he gave real life to the characters and helped convey their emotions really well. hope its the same guy for book 2.

I was given this audiobook for free and have left this review voluntarily.
