After an elite criminal profiling unit is shut down amid a storm of scandal and mismanagement, only one person emerges unscathed. Forensic psychiatrist, Doctor Alexander Gregory, has a reputation for being able to step inside the darkest minds to uncover whatever secrets lie hidden there and, soon enough, he finds himself drawn into the murky world of murder investigation. In the beautiful hills of County Mayo, Ireland, a killer is on the loose. Panic has a stranglehold on its rural community, and the Garda are running out of time. Gregory has sworn to follow a quiet life but, when the call comes, can he refuse to help their desperate search for justice?
Murder and mystery are peppered with dark humour in this fast-paced thriller set amidst the spectacular Irish landscape.

Dr. Alex Gregory is psychologist profiler who was bitten once by the press and decided to stick to his patients, particularly Cathy Jones, who went of the rails when her husband divorced her and killed two of her three children thirty years ago. when Alex accepts to help the police -despite being bitten once- we get to see the beautiful small town of Ballyfinny, where the killer might be anyone. Hugh Dancy's voice make listening to extended descriptions of the town and the scenery pleasant (i could listen to that man read the dictionary, the way he says the word "love" is a particular favourite of mine XD).
the story takes some twists and turns. I almost wondered who Cathy Jones' eldest son more than who the killer is. at least I knew we would find out who the killer is by the end but Cathy? <spoiler> thank God the author wasn't cruel and gave us the answer. two characters were raised in an orphanage and Alex's childhood was purposely ambiguous. Alex was the "obvious" choice so I couldn't be sure because <s>these authors, I swear</s> but yes, it's Alex </spoiler>
I wasn't the only one who noticed Alex is described as being devilishly handsome with dark curly hair and green eyes which match Hugh Dancy perfectly. Dancy played Will Graham, the profiler with a knack for understanding killers who caught Hannibal Lecter. seems the author is a follow fannibal XD. well played, miss Ross, well played.
