I am a great fan of Peter May and can never wait for his latest offering. I set aside a huge chunk of my weekend aside for this book. I was very impressed with the narration - I could listen to Peter Forbes read the phone book and the addition of Anna Murray was inspired. The beginning of the story is great - in fact I was delighted with everything until it got to about 1/2 hour before the end. Not wanting to give anything away all I will say is that I was really disappointed and felt that it really didn’t live up to Peter May’s usual standards.

and nothing wrong with that. Well read story that bowls along very well. I did guess a major part of the plot however there are some surprises too along the way. The split between the 2 narrators was a very good idea with Peter Forbes reading the main plot and Anna Murray speaking the flash back descriptions. Made the past and present much easier to piece together, something that is not always as easy when you listen to rather than read a book.

I enjoy Peter May's book, particularly for the settings - Paris and Lewis. But this one rambled on. What was the point of the French detective? What a ridiculous ending. I wouldn't recommend it, except to established fans. Don't expect Lewis trilogy standard.
As an audiobook it worked well. The two narrators helped, one for the present and one for the history.

I totally agree with the previous reviewer. For me it was difficult to believe that this was written by the same author. I’ve read every other book and loved them all. Usually the characters are so well written they feel like real people that you get to know. Not in this one, the characters were at once superficial and larger than life, not believable.
On top of this, the plot was fantastical and difficult to take seriously.
Definitely not like his other books.
The performance was, as usual, good. I like Peter Forbes delivery and voice. Anna Murray had a lovely voice and accent but I would have been content with Peter Forbes reading the whole book.

1st Peter May novel - just off to find more as I enjoyed thus one very much.

Loved the female narration and kept hoping she would be back as each new chapter began.... but sadly the male one less so - expressionless and tedious! A lost opportunity when the writing deserved so much more.....
