Una mattina di febbraio, un uomo chiama Maigret da un bistrot dicendo di essere braccato e in pericolo di vita. La telefonata si interrompe e poco dopo lo sconosciuto richiama da un altro locale, invocando aiuto. Per tutto il giorno la scena si ripete, da un bistrot all’altro, finché le telefonate cessano.
Quella notte il suo cadavere viene ritrovato in Place de la Concorde, accoltellato a morte. Da allora il commissario non ha più pace. Quel morto gli appartiene e vuole vendicarne la morte, come fosse un amico.
