About this listen

News people have a saying: 'If it bleeds, it leads'. And a bomb at Albert Macready Middle School is guaranteed to lead any bulletin.

Holly Gibney of the Finders Keepers detective agency is working on the case of a missing dog - and on her own need to be more assertive - when she sees the footage on TV. But when she tunes in again, to the late-night report, she realises there is something not quite right about the correspondent who was first on the scene. So begins 'If It Bleeds', a stand-alone sequel to the No. 1 bestselling THE OUTSIDER featuring the incomparable Holly on her first solo case - and also the riveting title story in Stephen King's brilliant new collection.

Dancing alongside are three more wonderful long stories from this 'formidably versatile author' (The Sunday Times) - 'Mr Harrigan's Phone', 'The Life of Chuck' and 'Rat'. All four display the richness of King's storytelling with grace, humour, horror and breathtaking suspense. A fascinating Author's Note gives us a wonderful insight into the origin of each story and the writer's unparalleled imagination.

All the voice talent here are great but when lined up next to others, Will Patton shines all the brighter. He truly is a first class voice actor and his versions of the Bill Hoges' trilogy cast are note perfect. King seems determined to test him as he gives one character the most specific vocal tick I've ever seen in a book but Patton carries it off flawlessly.

Ladies and gentlemen, Will Patton!

This is another great collection of stories from the master of horror. All 4 stories are brilliantly crafted and it's great to be re-united with Holly, Jerome, Barbara and Pete again as we get another instalment from The Outsider series. I thought that was going to be my favourite story from the collection but The Life of Chuck was incredibly good. I found it engrossing and ultimately quite sad but overall, it was extremely enjoyable. I can't wait for the next offering...

Another great book from Stephen King!

Narrators were really great, especially Will Patton.
The title story is the best, with The Rat oddly compelling.

Good collection

Another polished production from Audible. Stephen King's production line is remarkable. His generosity to his readers is apparently endless. My migration to audiobooks has been a success for me, thanks to quality of the narrators as well as the stories.

Another fine distraction during lockdown

Stephen King could never be accused of ever being less than meticulous and it's obvious he has a great love for Holly Gibney. The stories which bookend this are beautifully crafted and woven, able to stand on their own, but between them is this labour of love, which captivated me. The characters are perfect in their imperfections and the pace is spot on. Classic King. I was sorry to see it end and it has encouraged me to revisit the Outsider and Mr Mercedes.

Holly's triumph
