The basis for the film starring Academy Award nominee Will Smith, I Am Legend is a classic of horror and suspense.

In I Am Legend, a terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive are transformed into bloodthirsty creatures of the night. Robert Neville is the last living man on earth. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville’s blood. By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. How long can one man survive in a world of vampires?

Richard Matheson’s chilling tale is a white-knuckle ride into a world of darkness and terror.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. A passionately read, darkly written book which knocks the spots off the recent film which can only be described as a hollywood pastiche of a horror classic. Why didn't they just use the story in the book which is fantastic rather than do a 'contemporary adaptation'.

The book combines a gruesome picture of a world in decay with the character study of a man who travels to the edge of madness in adapting to his new world. An intelligent book which is a (or even the) classic of it's genre, not least because of the well-reasoned and fantastic ending.

Superbly read and gripping story

What did you like best about I Am Legend? What did you like least?

The narrators voice is really really really irritating. He tried to make it dramatic and maybe if his voice wasn't horrible it would have worked, but it was so it didn't.

The story itself is great, but for a change not as good as the film, still worth a listen though if you can get over the narrators voice

Would you be willing to try another one of Robertson Dean’s performances?

No

If this book were a film would you go see it?

I did

I almost couldn't finish listening to this book

After watching the film and finding it pretty lacklustre when it came to story and directing I came across a comment online saying that the book was significantly better than the film and many key parts were missed out.

As someone who mainly reads thrillers I was slightly deterred by ‘vampires’ and typically this wouldn’t be my go to book. However, this book is truly gripping. Displaying a mans fight with insanity is one of the hardest things to convey convincingly and this does just that.

The narration truly pulls it all together. The voices/accents to the sound effects are truly sublime. This is now one of my favourite Audible books (if not my #1). I thoroughly recommend this.

From the film, to the book.

albeit a depressing, repetitive and dull story content, this book kept me gripped from cover to cover (start to end of the audiobook!) and I couldn't help but pick up on all the ideas that have been nicked from it over the years! The ending is ripped by The Girl with all the Gifts, the idea behind the complex virus is repeated throughout modern zombie movies such as World War Z, the man stuck in a house alone theme (such in the way that has been done in this book) has been used by a lot of indie books as a cheap yet effective way to do a zombie movie .

the narration for the audiobook was sublime, keeping me hooked all the way through.

Any misgivings I have from the book can be answered by its age, it's so old that every idea in this book has been used by the cinematic community over the years, making the ideas seem old and unoriginal when actually they are all original.

One point of warning - the book is nothing like the film in almost every way. They didn't use anything but the name and the premise for the movie. For me that's a good thing but for others maybe not so, the book (being old As F) can leave some people impatient and wanting more.

Kicked off every modern zombie movie

I'm totally new to audio books, this being only my 2nd. I downloaded this yesterday thinking it was going to last me the week going back and for work.
Went to bed quite tired at about 12.30am and thought i'd just listen to a chapter or two until i fall asleep.

5 hours later i was laying there still listening, totally gripped.

The story is fantastic, the narrator is fantastic

If you're a fan of horror, or you spent nights as a child under the duvet reading ghost stories by torchlight, you will love this book.

Even if you're not a fan of horror you should listen to this

Brilliant
