Summary

Dan's survived a lot. Her mother died. Her two sisters loathed her. One aunt hated her. The other was strangely distant, but the worst storm was being dumped by her childhood best friend/high school boyfriend/first love for her younger sister. There went the one person who was hers and with that, the main reason she stuck around. So, she left for 10 years. But now she's back, and nothing's the same.

This has been such an emolisten! Dani's life has been full of lies, secrecy, tragedy and a sense of abandonment, but, finally, she is home to dig through all of these, find the truth and heal. The narrator, Sarah Mollo Christensen, is excellent. She is nuanced, expressive and the story just flows from her. Fabulous 💖💖💖💖💖

This story follows Dani as she is navigating her return home following 10 years away. the secrets are pulled out into daylight all through the story. it will be one of my favourite stories. The romance between Jonah and Dani is fantastic. the Spector of her former lover and friend Jake keeps playing on the sidelines. with the will they won't they feelings from the town. But Jake is now with Danii's older sister. having been with her dead younger sister before that. Which I have to admit I found odd!!!

such an amazing story full of emotion.

16 years old fantasy, maybe I’m too realistic for this, but boring and predictable. Relationship do no work this way, but maybe if you need to stay in a fantasy

Dani runs away from home after her childhood best friend and boyfriend breaks up with her for her sister. Ten years later she comes back home to heal, after having survived a natural disaster, to find her sister dead and her ex bf engaged to her other sister.

This is a small town tale, involving a family with generations and layers of secrets: Two generations of three sisters, who for whatever reason just don’t get on. There’s a lot going on, romance with Jonah, the town bad boy turned hero, the tension between Dani and her remaining sister Julia who is now engaged to Jake her ex, the tension between Dani and her favourite aunt May, the tension and lack of closure between Dani and Jake (and can I just say here ewww! All three sisters Jake? Seriously dude?) and on top of all that the various secrets, who is their father? Who is their grandfather? What happened to their grandmother? Why did Dani never feel part of the family? Also underneath all that is a town mystery, regarding developers and waterways.

What’s poor about this story is the happenstance and coincidence that drives a lot of the narrative, people turning up in random places when they shouldn’t really be there. It’s poor plotting - there are other ways to work people into a story, and in some cases it was a little unbelievable. Also as with a lot of Tijin’s stories, there’s a hint of danger that never really comes to fruition, but just disappears. There was a lot of that in this book, not least the jump at the end from the final chapter where everything was a disaster, and the sunny epilogue. All seemed a bit rushed.

What’s great about this book are the characters, who are all flawed to a greater or lesser degree (except Jonah who is just perfectly swoon able!), yet there are no real villains (apart from Jenny possibly but she’s so inconsequential as not to matter). Dani is lost when we meet her, suffering imho from survivors guilt, which makes her do a terrible thing to Boon, but even though I did feel terribly sorry for Boon, it is true that he and Dani knew so little about each other they were not the right people to be with each other. He was a sweet guy though and I would have liked for him to have his own story. The disaster at the end was exciting, and came in waves (pun intended), and kept me on the edge of my seat (even if it did all seem to stop abruptly.)

I think this might be an early work of Tijan, and I think that shows in the plotting, and the fact the characters all seemed a bit immature for 30 somethings. But it’s a good listen, as the narrator did a really good job of portraying what was in the page to bring it alive. Worth a listen.
