About this listen

The third and most ambitious novel from this unique and acclaimed writer, FRUIT OF THE LEMON establishes Andrea Levy alongside Arundhati Roy and Meera Syal in the first rank of British fiction.

Faith Jackson fixes herself up with a great job in TV and the perfect flatshare. But neither is that perfect - and nor are her relations with her overbearing, though always loving family. Furious and perplexed when her parents announce their intention to retire back home to Jamaica, Faith makes her own journey there, where she is immediately welcomed by her Aunt Coral, keeper of a rich cargo of family history. Through the weave of her aunt's storytelling a cast of characters unfolds stretching back to Cuba and Panama, Harlem and Scotland, a story that passes through London and sweeps through continents.

Loved this novel. Full of humour but also shockingly revealing in parts. Thoroughly recommend- and her other novels too.

Poignant and funny

A great story of becoming and belonging. Read so that all the characters shone. Recommended reading for anyone.

Great story and fantastic reader who made the characters come to life

Initally, despite feeling sympathy for the protagonist, I felt no real connection to her. This made me consider abandoning the book. In the second part of the book, I realised that the reason I felt no connection to her was because she had no connection to herself. Ultimately, I enjoyed the colourful characters as the tetherless protagonist found her roots.

Stick with it!

Hands down the best book I have read this year. I absolutely loved it and wanted it to last longer. Eagerly waiting for Andrea’s next book. Every one has been amazing.
