About this listen

READ BY THE AUTHOR

'Get your daughters to read this, but only after your partners and sons have finished it’

'An astute and persuasive page-turner' Observer

'Powerful’ Sunday Times

Too often, we blame women. For walking home alone at night. For not demanding a seat at the table. For not overcoming the odds that are stacked against them.

This distracts us from the real problem: the failings and biases of a society that was not built for women. In this explosive book, feminist writer and activist Laura Bates exposes the systemic prejudice at the heart of five of our key institutions.

Education
Politics
Media
Policing
Criminal justice

Combining stories with shocking evidence, Fix the System, Not the Women is a blazing examination of sexual injustice and a rallying cry for reform.

Critic reviews

‘Entertaining and informative. Its perfectly intelligent advice is in dire need of being put into practice. Get your daughters to read this, but only after your partners and sons have finished it’
(Jo Brand)
'An astute and persuasive page-turner, a clear-sighted, compelling examination of injustice'
‘An urgent and important book. I read it with rage and anger at the injustices and inequalities, at how women are shamed and how they internalise this shame, and how they are held responsible for creating change rather than holding the systems and societal structures accountable for their oppression. But in the end, I read this with great optimism and hope. Because if we need to change this world, for us, and for our daughters, we have to fix the system. And this book is a blistering manifesto for this change' (Dr Pragya Agarwal)
‘Powerful . . . a summary of the injustices women face — and the way that these interact with other forms of prejudice’
'I am in awe of Laura Bates and her ability to perfectly balance facts and her personal experiences, opinions and emotions. Her writing is nothing short of perfect' (Sofie Hagen, author of Happy Fat)
'I inhaled this. It is INCREDIBLE. Absolute perfection' (Joeli Brearley, founder of Pregnant Then Screwed)
Timely. Buy it for the men in your life
'An almighty roar of a book' (Terri White, author of Coming Undone)
I challenge any man to read this book and still deny there’s a problem

Depressing reality but a necessary education. Should be compulsory for teachers, lecturers and MPs. Well researched, written and read by Laura Bates. Thank you for doing the work.

As a male, listening to better understand the probable experiences of my daughters, this is a horrifying insight into the experiences of women during their lives. It should and will cause concern and distress in the mind of any right minded male that is prepared to hear the message within and accept it as the truth. Only blind ignorance and willful neglect could leave you unaffected by this book. It is a well researched, strongly argued, and powerful piece of writing

Dynamic shifting, powerfully written argument
