About this listen

AD 255; the Roman Imperium is stretched to breaking point, its authority and might challenged throughout the territories and along every border. Yet the most lethal threat lurks far to the east in Persia, where the massing forces of the Sassanid Empire loom with fiery menace.

The far-flung and isolated citadel of Arete faces out across the wasteland, awaiting the inevitable invasion. One man is sent to marshal the defences of this lonely city; one man to shore up the crumbling walls of a once indomitable symbol of Roman power; a man whose name itself means war, a man called Ballista.

Alone, Ballista is called to muster the forces and the courage to stand first and to stand hard against the greatest enemy ever to confront the Imperium.

I have read the entire series, they are brilliant reads. this audio rendition was no disappointment, well read it brought life to the characters and story. not sure why the other titles aren't available.

There’s a big jump in the story from chapter 12 to 17. Other than that, it’s well written easy listening but highly predictable. If you don’t engage your brain whilst listening then it’s enjoyable.

This was a fantastic book, perhaps the most historically accurate writer of 'Roman Fiction' this doesn't stop the author from also producing a cracking story with good characters. Narrator does a great job too.

My only gripe is that books 2 and 3 in the series are not currently availiable although the 4th book is! Where's the sense in that?!

I read this long ago and it seemed more exciting, the narrator is a bit bland. The story however makes up for that, and the graphic description of life at this time is worked well into the tale. Sergey must of been terrible for both sides and the intense nerves of citizens and attackers comes over brilliantly.
