About this listen

WAS SHE A SWEET SOUTHERN CHARMER?
OR A COLD-BLOODED KILLER?
For their wedding portrait, petite Pat Taylor and handsome Tom Allanson posed as Rhett and Scarlett.
Both came from fine Southern families, and dreamed of the Tara-like plantation where they would grow roses, raise horses, and move in the genteel circles of Atlanta society. Less than two months later, their dream exploded in terror and murder: their beautiful home mysteriously burned to the ground and Tom was convicted of the brutal slaying of his mother and father.
Pat's only brother had died in a puzzling suicide, her grandparents-in-law were poisoned with arsenic, and no one -- from her wealthy employers to her own children -- was safe when Pat Allanson didn't get her way. It took Georgia lawmen more than two decades to stop her for good -- if indeed they have.
In this fascinating account, Ann Rule delivers a tour de force: a whirlwind of misguided love, denial, guilt, and passions out of control; a series of brilliantly manipulated crimes; the bizarre and horrifying tale of two families brought to ruin; and, at the center of it all, the heartless, supremely selfish sociopath whose evil hid behind soft words and gentle manners, but who destroyed -- without mercy -- those who loved her.©1992 Ann Rule. The narrator was excellent however the story ended very quickly, I would have liked a bit more of an ending.

Ended just like that!

Ann Rule once again delivers a gripping true-crime story that draws you deep into the lives of those entangled in tragedy. Everything She Ever Wanted is an engaging read filled with Rule’s signature compassion and curiosity about human behavior. The narrative pulls you along as she unravels the details of an unsettling crime, painting vivid portraits of the people involved and the chilling circumstances surrounding them. This is a re-telling of a family feud taken to extremes.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I found it slightly less in-depth than some of her other works. The pacing felt a bit lighter on the investigative side, and I would have loved more of the meticulous detail that Rule often provides. However, this doesn’t take away from her talent for weaving fact with emotional depth, making the story both compelling and deeply human.

What I’ve always admired most about Ann Rule, and what shines through here; is her ability to make readers see beyond the headlines. She doesn’t just recount crimes; she explores the lives, motivations, and vulnerabilities of everyone involved. That understanding of the human side of murder is what makes her writing so powerful, and Everything She Ever Wanted still captures that essence beautifully, earning a solid four stars from me.

Fascinating, well written book. Expertly narrated by Betty Buckley.

Having read books by Ann Rule, I was very hopeful, but the way it was read was simply lacking everything to keep any interest! Real shame.
