Mobster Al "Scarface" Capone, "Machine Gun" Kelly, Robert Stroud, aka the Birdman: only the most violent, desperate criminals went to Alcatraz Island, called "The Rock" and known for its harsh conditions. This gripping true crime classic, originally written in 1963 and newly reissued, tells the story of life on The Rock and of 14 ingenious escape attempts by the prisoners. Most notable perhaps was Frank Morris, whose daring plan of escape was the basis for the memorable 1979 Clint Eastwood movie Escape from Alcatraz.©1963 J. Some very disturbing truths in this book, morbidly fascinating.
Worth a listen, comforting to know it’s no longer in use.

What made the experience of listening to Escape from Alcatraz the most enjoyable?

I've always loved Alcatraz - I find it holds such incredible history so just hearing stories about how the inmates lived and the different escape attempts was incredibly interesting.

What did you like best about this story?

Learning about Alcatraz and how the island was a world unto it's own.

What does Patrick Cullen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I chose to listen to this book rather than read it because I got the impression that it would be an awful lot to take in and could at parts be quite boring. Patrick Cullen took a factual book and made it very interesting - I never felt bored and certainly wanted to keep listening.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I thoroughly enjoyed the build up to Frank Morris' escape. The lengths they went to and the risks they took really kept me hooked.

Any additional comments?

If like me you've always wanted to learn more about Alcatraz and what went on over there then this is definitely the book for you.
