This is a great book for both boys and girls who love soccer. They will hear about soccer greats from the past and present, along with stories like how the Football Association was created, and how women got involved in the sport playing in secret. What I love most is how, after every story, the author asks the listener to reflect in some way on a point from the story, such as setting a goal to achieve or leadership qualities they have in themselves. There are many great stories of female soccer players, as well, to inspire young girls. Great for character building!

Kids this age know who Messi is from social media but not really how he or Pele got there. Each chapter here is a short story about a real player, and the lessons about resilience, teamwork, and confidence come out through what actually happened on the field instead of someone narrating them at you. Marta and Christine Sinclair getting their own chapters was a real plus, since a lot of soccer books at this age aimed mostly at boys ignore the women's game entirely.

Chapter length runs short enough to fit one per drive to practice, and the trivia at the end gives kids something to argue about in the back seat after.
