But at first, it actually took a while for the story to captivate me. This was probably because the author created the two protagonists, Aaron and Kenny, in such depth that it takes a while to get to know them well. Not much happens at the beginning. Kenneth Lyons is a professor and a brilliant criminal psychologist. Aaron is the boy who was placed in foster care after his parents were convicted of being serial killers by Kenny. I found the constellation quite interesting, and after about a third of the way through, I was completely captivated by the story.
Aaron had to go through so much just because of his parents—it broke my heart. Because he not only experienced rejection in the foster care system, but also from Kenny. I wanted to take him in my arms and tell him that everything would be okay.
The professor, on the other hand, is fighting his own battle between desire and attraction to Aaron and ethics. I wasn't always thrilled with the decisions he made, but I could understand his reasons. ,

Once the story picked up speed, it was exciting, but at the same time dark and gloomy, and unfortunately the ending came much too quickly. I'm waiting for the second volume and I'm not giving up hope that there will be a happy ending for Aaron and Kenny – because the chemistry between the two is definitely palpable!
The audiobook was narrated by Piers Ryman, and he did a brilliant job! He read in a very varied way, and I was able to empathize with Kenny and Aaron very well because Piers Ryman brought them to life and conveyed their emotions superbly

This is a darker story, a psychological thriller that delves into the minds of the people affected by serial killers, from their son to the man obsessed with the whys of their behaviour. It’s a story of obsession, forbidden desires and self-discovery. Intriguing and mesmerising. It’s the beginning of a journey that I can’t wait to re-take in audio through the great performance by Piers Ryman.

Okay, had no idea what that meant.
That said, I’d met Aaron in CF’s previous Christmas book and I’d begged - I mean begged - for him to get his own book. Little did I know, that was CF’s devious plan. So all I knew about him was that he’d been in care and he wanted to attend university without everyone knowing about his past. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out and he’s on the university’s radar. As well as having a restricted file about his past. But it’s in uni now and has a plan. Getting to study with Dr. Kenneth Lyons – in the psychology class – is at the top of his list.
What I didn’t know, of course, was that the men had a weird and disturbing connection to each other. One that held my attention for the entire book.
I love Aaron. I want to wrap him up in a blanket and keep away all the bad stuff in the world. No one should have to go through what he did.
Dr. Lyons – Kenny – also intrigued me. He’s got his own issues that he needs to deal with. Not the least is his ‘relationship’ with Aaron.
Then a mysterious death, suspicions, a love from the past, and an ending I didn’t see coming - although I did catch one clue. I’m glad to see there are more books and I can’t wait.
Love Piers Ryman. I’ll listen to anything he narrates – he and CF make great audiobooks together. I’m glad to see there’s more to come. I can’t wait.

10 years prior the prologue shows Aaron's tragic upbringing and his parents horrific secrets.
10 years later Aaron and Ken meet at a dance club. Flash forward and Aaron is a student and Ken is his professor. The class Ken is teaching is forensic psychology and Aaron's family happens to be the topic focus. Ken tells himself students are off limits but he can't resist the pull he feels for Aaron and why he feels familiar and not just due to their latest hookup.
I loved both of the main characters and thought that they were written very well. The world building is great and I can't wait to read more. I litterally could have read this in one read had I had the time. It kept my attention from start to finish and definitely kept me guessing about who is good and who is evil. Although I did guess the real killer correctly at about 70%. Criminal psychology is my degree so I always have an interest in it and this did not disappoint.
I can't say much about this book without spoilering but if u are into true crime and don't mind that there isn't much physical action between the 2 MCs but they are both obsessed and protective of each other, than you will love this book. I do wish that Ken wasn't such a professional and gave in and there was more steam, but the sparks were definitely still flying between the 2 MCs. Hopefully there's more steam in book 2. This is just the beginning. There is more to look forward too.
The narrator did a great job. They had a pleasant voice/accent. They kept a good pace/flow. They expressed all the emotions wonderfully and brought the story to life. They gave all of the characters including the side characters their own distinct voice that suited them each perfectly and made it easy to follow the story.

It’s been a really long time since I read a proper book series, where the romance is told across all the books and I really enjoyed this one! Yes we don’t get a ton of “spicy scenes” with our MCs together but the tension is palpable!
Plus so much else is going on plot-wise, I didn’t feel like anything was missing because I was fully invested in solving the crime mystery of the book. Which is what makes this imo more a crime book with romantic elements, but I know in the next books their relationship will continue to develop. I can’t wait for the next book to be available on audio because the story and narration are both fantastic!!
