On Keyfaetuun's Fortune Island, Russell is a widowed goatherd who one day notices raccoons are stealing the feed from his goats. When he set up several pain-free traps to catch them and relocate them, he doesn't find a masked mammal with whiskers caught within. Instead, a red-faced, crying, nine-month-old baby has found her way into his trap and into his life.
As he cares for the child, he deals with the loss of his wife and son all over again, while discovering this new child that fate delivered to him makes him happy in ways he never thought he could be again. Time passes, and the baby he calls Teea grows, but when no one comes seeking her, Russell decides to take Teea to the Mother of All Seasons, the fae oracle of Fortune Island, to learn just how their fates may be bound together, hoping The Mother of All Seasons can give an answer.
She reveals he is destined toward risking it all for the sake of the baby who has become his "dot," the new center of his world.
