Returned to the book in preparation for the third entry in the trilogy, coming later this month. I think I still prefer My Heart Is A Chainsaw, but there's not a lot in it. Jade, or Jennifer, shows such growth compared to the first book - the world is still so desperately unfair to her, but she handles it differently. The book is gorier, nastier, and more full-throttle from the start than the previous entry, too.

I did miss Cara Gee's narration from the first book. The cast is good, there's nothing wrong here, but Gee brought Daniels to life in a way I really missed.

I really enjoyed the Slasher trilogy. My Heart Is A Chainsaw was great, but I found it hard to get into at the start. But Fear The Reaper was by far my favourite. I have the book as well. You can tell Jade, who now wants to be called Jennifer, has grown up and is forming her own thoughts and ideas rather than relying on slashers. Although the movie references helped form an idea of what is going on and who else was involved. It was also nice to see the development of Jennifer's friendship with Leather Mondragon blossom.

Like one of the other reviewers, I occasionally found this a bit hard to follow. The wider cast and some twists make it a more demanding listen than Chainsaw, and somewhat lacks the laser focus from Jade's perspective in the previous book, but the ending is magnificent. I'm excited for the final part of the trilogy and will definitely be picking it up.

The continuation of Jade Daniels' story and the horror of living in Proofrock, Idaho is a masterful example of a slasher novel. It's steeped in horror cinema, drawing on-its-sleeve inspiration from the movies Jones loves, but it's the characters i love here. Jade, fresh out of prison after the events of the first novel (My Heart is a Chainsaw), trying to make sense of who she is after both saving and killing people, and what she should do about the very real threat of Dark Mill South. Letha struggling with the physical toll she carries while being a wife and mother. Hardy, ever the reliable father/grandfather figure for Jade, still haunted by his daughter and wife's deaths. And of course, Cinnamon and Ginger, dealing with trauma in their own unique ways. Which all makes the book sound far more po-faced than it is - a blood-and-guts-soaked romp through a town cut off by a blizzard, with a serial killer on the loose. If you love Scream, Halloween, Friday 13th and the like, then get reading this already.
