A new world. A thousand threats. Welcome to The Continent.

Felix's life on Earth had become a series of dead-end jobs, ruined relationships, and rotating apartments smaller than most postage stamps. By all accounts, even his own, he was a coward. Too afraid to move forward, to take risks. Yet when given the chance to choose between risking his life or walking away from a deadly encounter, he didn't hesitate.

Moments before his untimely demise, Felix was snatched from earth and thrust into a magical world known only as "The Continent". Empowered by the "System", he learns that he can strengthen himself through combat and dedication. To survive, he'll have to push himself beyond his limits, or else fall to the monsters all around him.

Levels, stats, and magic. Death is the start of a terrible fate, but if he lives...no one knows what he will become.

I got this book on a whim, I am so glad I did!
A man is wrenched to another world, are the people who did it using him to save it or ruin it?

A great story with good characters and sound world building. The leveling up system is easy to understand and quite intuitive. Narration, by Travis Baldree, is excellent.

Even though the story is over 20 hours long, it felt like I completed it in half the time. Can't wait for the next one!

An Excellent Addition to the LitRPG Genre

has several common components but uses them well and includes a few genuinely novel twists and surprises that make it interesting. A little unnecessarily wordy at times really going for that thesaurus, but overall really great.

good lit rpg

I've never read/listened to this genre. I came with a bit of skeptism, wondering why everyone gave great reviews.

Hopefully without much spoilers here, the beginning was decently interesting, and Travis definitely did an amazing job narrating the emotions of the characters.

The stat screen dump could become repetitive as others have said, but generally it shouldn't be a problem, just skip ahead

The story became more and more engaging and hooking me in as Felix other people. Every engagement he had with enemies was narrated and written very well, I've never imagined myself feeling thrilled and so emotionally engaged in a book being read aloud, much like I do with animes and other shows.

Surprisingly Captivating

Coming back to write a review now that I am on the (current) last book (9 at the time of writing this).

TL;DR Book is solid in most aspects and despite a few flaws/inconsistencies it is worth your time, at least give it a try.

I got this book on a whim and can say I don't really regret it. The overall story is typical litRPG fanfare, stumble from one unique encounter to another, barely surviving yet gaining tremendous power from it all. The magic system is simple yet easy to understand and I quiet enjoy the way everyone has different ways of visualizing their power. There is a minor problem with pacing, especially when it comes to time sensitive things, but it is what it is. I feel the absolute strongest thing about the series is the way the characters are written, aside from the MC but I'll get into that in a moment, coupled with the narrators performance really helps to draw you in. Serious props to Travis Baldree because I don't think I would have liked this book as much if it wasn't for his voice acting.

Moving onto the side characters, each side character actually has a personality, drive, emotions, reputation and so-on-and-so-forth. They actually FEEL like they're alive and living their lives in this world, not just cardboard cutouts that exist simply to support the MC. They bicker and banter, have preferences, religious beliefs that differ, and have their own motivations for doing what they do. They support the MC both directly and indirectly in a way that feels natural. Harn is easily one of my favorite characters in the series but all of the side characters are so well written that I can say I enjoy them all.

The MC on the other hand... he just feel's so bland. I don't think it's that he's written poorly, but that it's the fact he's shoved into the "kind to a fault" archetype. He is always willing to go above and beyond for those around him, even former enemies or absolute strangers, simply because he believes it's the right thing to do. While I can't say I disagree with that mindset, I personally think it's hard to nail this archetype without it feeling flat, and sadly this is a case where it feels flat. Especially with the fact that like so many other litRPG MC's he doesn't seem to be bothered much at all with killing creatures/monsters/people. "it's either me or them" makes a lot of sense but I'd like to see an MC who actually understood what it means to take a life and the repercussions of suddenly having to make that choice when it's not how you have lived your life before.

I have 3 problems specifically with the MC that bother me the most.
Firstly, he is whisked away from his home and tossed into a near death experience but aside from some minor trauma that is cleared up relatively quickly he almost never thinks about home/Earth. Every time he does he just follows up with some form of "but I don't wanna think about that right now so I'll shove it deep inside and think about it later". There is an in-universe explanation for this, his willpower stat, but that just feels like a cheap way out. Why are so many litRPG writers afraid to have their characters actually be, well, afraid? Why can't they be terrified, upset, confused and angry? I want to see him grow and develop as a person, watching him battle with his own ideas/expectations against the ideas/expectations of the world around him, but it barely ever happens. MC is just Mr. Typical Good Guy.
Secondly, this ties in a bit with the first problem, but how is it not a single soul (for the most part) questions MC about Earth? Like, when his secrets are finally out everyone is just kind of like "oh no! anyways". There is no fascination with wanting to know more about his world despite the fact he shows such enthusiasm to learn about this new world. I find it hard to believe that anyone wouldn't be curious to know what life would be like on another world. Aside from a single group/person who is constantly hounding him for Earthly knowledge, not a single other person seems to have any interest what-so-ever. Baffling.
Finally, MC is fascinated with magic, wouldn't we all be, and talks about how he wishes to learn lots of magic and learn about magic, but he never does! If the skill isn't learned directly through combat or him 'taking' it then he almost never learns magic any other way. Even when introduced to those skilled in magics different from his he never sits down and talks/learns anything about it. He reads a few books at one point but nothing that isn't designed to simply advance the plot in some minor way.

All in all, it IS a good series despite my bickering about the MC and I highly recommend to at least give it a book or two's worth of a try.

Side characters are phenomenal, MC is a snooze.
