About this listen

Dick Whittington is a character in a British folklore, very loosely based on Richard Whittington, a medieval merchant as well as Lord Mayor of London and a Member of Parliament.

In this traditional story, Dick, a boy from a poor family, sets out for London to make his fortune, accompanied by his cat. They have a number of remarkable adventures along the way.

Jill Masters offers a brightly voiced performance in this rendition of a 14th-century English folk tale.

The title character of Dick Whittington and His Cat is an orphan who arrives in London looking for fortune. Finding work with a wealthy merchant, Mr. Fitzwarren, Dick lives in a rat-infested room. Dick buys a cat that rids him from the rats and, eventually, delivers him from rags to riches.

Masters’ subtle British accent, along with the dramatic flair she adds to dialogue, help make this story appealing to kids and all fans of "poor orphan" tales.
