Rome is in chaos. The empire of a mobster chief is falling apart following his death. Rivals, fearsome relatives and associates are taking up position to vie for the spoils.

With hideous murders in the streets of Rome, a lone female traveller arrives with an agenda of her own. But when her corpse is dragged out of the river bearing signs of foul play, Flavia Albia is drawn in, concerned about her fellow Briton's fate.

Albia's quest to find the killer becomes deeply personal when she discovers a man at the centre of the plot is an old adversary of hers. Will she be obsessed by revenge? Can she let the past go, or will it consume her?©2024 Lindsey Davis

loved this storey linking Albia's past, with her father, and the present. Filled with details as usual, the story comes to life and gives a wonderful dangerous picture of the past in Rome.

This is another excellent story from Lindsey Davis. This is the 12 (Flavia Albia) book and they just get better and better. The plot is wonderful and the characters are all feel like old friends. The narration is perfect

I really enjoy Jane Collingwood narrating the Flavia Albia books. This book brought back Falco and Petronius, Maya and the annoying Milvia. It is lovely to see how their lives progress.
This was probably my favourite of all the Flavia Albia series.

A joining of the two series of books.

The characters became more real as the book progressed. The narrator was easy and clear to listen to

Tha annual treat of this series never disappoints. Old friends and continuing enmities. Twists in the tale. Dry humour. Well narrated.
