Summary

A former slave fighting for justice. A reclusive warrior who no longer believes it exists. And a dark magic that will entangle their fates.

Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.

Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders.

The Orders's intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. But even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future...or the downfall of them both.

But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders's deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart.

Even if it means wielding death itself.

Contains mature themes.

I would probably prefer to read this book myself. oersonalky couldn't stand the narrator. good story but the narrator ruins it for me.

terrible narrating

The book deserved better narators! so first of all the male narrator needs to sort out his set up because you could hear his breaths and the over pronunciation of some letters when he spoke. particularly at the start of a chapter or when there was tension. it sounded awful and really unprofessional. whatever microphone he used was either not set up correctly or he just couldn't use it.
The female narrator spoke wonderfully, good character voices with a clear distinction between them. personally I don't think her voice was right for the characters but that's a personal preference/opinion.
the worst part was that the narrators must have recorded separately because they pronounced things differently and when the female spoke for max she used an accent and a twang to his voice that the male narrator just failed to notice/ use which was really annoying! hearing one narrator speak his voice then a complete different interpretation of the same voice would take over... I dnf the audio at 60%-70% as I couldn't cope any longer!

when I read the book it was far better! a much better story and it pulled me in deeper while reading it than while listening to it- which is a massive shame. personally I judge the narrators competency on their ability to pull me into the story- the female did pull me in but the male was so awful I just couldn't go on.

so read this one, don't listen! the book was better!

Read it, DONT listen to it

The narration made this very hard to finish. Female voice made main character so high pitched and childlike, male voice was breathing so loudly it grated. If I decide to continue the series I will read rather than listen

Story good but slow, narration painful

I saw a lot of negative reviews about this and that people did not finish. So when I spotted it in the plus catalogue I decided to listen to it without using a credit. I personally loved it. Tisaanah is a relatable character and Max makes me chuckle so much. In the last third of the book I was on the edge of my seat. So much so that I bought the second book with a credit.

To add: I listened to the Tisaanah parts at 1.5 / 1.7 speed and I found that enjoyable. Though Max's parts I could only listen to at 1.3 / 1.5. The changing view can be a bit confusing since both narrators do different voices for each other and the rest of the characters. But that was a minor annoyance.

Loved it

Lovely story. You can't help but deeply route for the main character, her tragic past; witty humour; determination and unabashed desire to see it through. Of course, it is also made by the strong supporting characters all around her. Overall, brilliant read.

Magic, trials, plots and a sweet romance
