About this listen

From USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb comes the riveting return of crime analyst Vera Boyett, fighting for justice—and her life—amid her Tennessee roots.

Vera Boyett is a master at cracking a case.

After tragedy destroyed her career as deputy police chief, she felt lost. Moving back home near her sisters, she put her skills back to use as a crime analyst, and now her star is finally back on the rise. Vera’s work really begins to heat up after the local sheriff, Gray “Bent” Benton, calls to ask her for assistance with a pressing case.

Pushing aside their complicated past, Vera agrees to help Bent search for a missing reporter. But their investigation uncovers an improbable connection to the Messenger, a serial killer she put behind bars twelve years ago. The killer, who is dying of cancer, wants his final revenge. And the reporter is merely a distraction—Vera is his true target.

When the Messenger pulls her sister Eve into his twisted game, Vera vows to stop him for good. But can she find Eve and the reporter before it’s too late?

started off liking Vera, but her hypocritical traits where she even hides evidence, colluding in this false narrative; that her family is beyond reproach. her sister Eve is basically a psychopath and at the least obnoxious. Story too focused on the minutiae of Vera's daily life and how everything affects her rather than the intricacies of the evidence and crime-solving. Dear old Sheriff Benton too slavishly plodding behind in her 'god-like' wake. while she constantly hides stuff from him and actually destroys or hides evidence. Vera is by turns self-flagellating then haughty and pompous; dismissive of Benton and others. hypocritical in that she rightly slates the awful bully Elizabeth also a psycho for causing havoc to further her equally questionable son's career, while Vera's herself does similar with her own sisters. the difference is that she is apparently a 'lawman' and should indeed be exemplary when it comes to transparency. It's sad, as I find I'm too often irritated by Vera, for her anxieties about how her sisters perceive her (when neither of them help or protect her at all - in fact seem to blame her for all their ills) and annoyed at the lack of wholeness in the stories of Vera Boyett. I read all three of another series of this author's books and on the whole completely enjoyed the characters. Kim Jones
