This is the story of Charlton, an enslaved boy on a South Carolina plantation in the mid-1800s, who is in love with Belle, the master's daughter. She promises to marry him if he writes out a handful of words from the Declaration of Independence in the trackway leading to the big house to convince the master that Charlton has rights.
These events set him on an irrevocable course to understanding the vicious and unjust world of the American South, where innocent childhood dreams lead to unthinkable cruelty.
