Summary

The practical and inspiring parenting book offering a three-step programme to transform family life and raise responsible, capable, happy children – from an acclaimed psychologist and parenting coach.

Most parenting books focus on changing a child's behaviour, but the truth is that real change only happens when the parent-child relationship shifts.

In Calm Parents, Happy Kids, Dr Laura Markham introduces a positive parenting approach that helps create this shift, eliminating threats, power struggles, and manipulation, in favour of setting limits with empathy and communication.

Published as Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids in the US, this research-led guide draws on the latest findings in brain development and emotional awareness to help you:

  • Stay calm as a parent, even in challenging moments
  • Reduce tantrums, meltdowns and power struggles
  • Set clear, consistent limits without shouting or punishment
  • Build a strong parent-child connection through empathy and communication
  • Support your child’s emotional development and self-regulation
  • Raise confident, self-disciplined and cooperative children

With a simple three-step programme and real-life examples, this book offers proven strategies for managing toddler behaviour, handling big emotions, and creating a more peaceful family life.

Empowering and practical, Calm Parents, Happy Kids is perfect for parents who don’t want to keep their calm, avoid confrontation, and build co-operation with their children.

‘If you want to feel more confident and peaceful as a parent, this is the book.’
Elizabeth Pantley, bestselling author of The No-Cry Sleep Solution

Would you listen to Calm Parents, Happy Kids again? Why?

Yes, I still do listen to it. Each time I remember a little bit more.

Any additional comments?

The author uses a lot of examples of the things you should say. I think it really helps hearing the reader say them. It seems easier to recall them when I'm talking with my kids than if I had just read them.

Love this book. I listen to it over and over.

Common sense but nice to be reminded. Also has some (could have more) practical tips. I saw a big difference in my child straight after I implemented things from the book. I also feel better as a parent. Loved the calm narration, easy listening.

A must for all parents!
