About this listen

Daniel just wants someone he can rely on…

With his parents in and out of prison, Daniel has spent the last three years in a children’s home, feeling forgotten and with nowhere to truly belong.

When he arrives at Casey and Mike’s, his challenging and unpredictable behaviour soon reveals a much darker past than anyone had imagined.

Can Casey find a way to reach Daniel and help him build a brighter future before it’s too late?

Perfect for readers who were moved by A Family Friend, Little Girl Lost, I Want My Daddy, and I Just Want to Be Loved – powerful true stories of vulnerable children, resilience, and the life-changing impact of foster care.

So glad Casey is sharing more of her world. For those of us who 'get' the world DJ was in, i know I hope Casey drops the guilt over her journey with DJ.
As much as I deeply admire their dedication, having DJ remain was maybe more dangerous than she realized....there was never a way for it to work out and Casey, PLEASE let go of any regrets....you guys went further than any other carers would have....dangerously further, really.
Being 70, it is just a sad, sad fact that things are going to get worse in the future for kids like DJ and carers like you should never be put into that type of situation.
The Watson's are a truly special couple....

A raw view into a sad reality

For the first part, and knowing a fair bit about county lines, I was surprised and a little confused. Mike & Casey are 2 of the best in the land - big awareness of the sicknesses in our society and world, with respect to drugs, and exploitation. I was initially perplexed - as this was evident early on that the boy was a victim. However, I realised that we the reader get the full story and the facts as they are presented give US the benefit of foresight - we have an idea already what the potential and variables might be. Casey and Mike walked the living agonies day by day, as things unfolded and it was definitely hard to spot. His involvement with drugs was revealed sooo much more insidiously 'it's only a bit of weeeed!'. This changed as the boy's involvement changed. When they knew drugs were more of a significant feature boy did they try ... however were given the sadly limited accessibility of resources - and not until they entirely appropriately took the right eventual step to hand this over, was the boy given what ultimately saved his life. Why are these NOT available earlier on in this world of child exploitation? Children die/become incarcerated, and give up on themselves. There are some children whose tragic stories are written from birth through damaging parenting and he is / was one of them and THANK GOODNESS that final step was made. Im elated to finally read about the resources that THEN became available. Casey and Mike - I don’t believe you're 'just becoming too old' for this, you are amazing, however you could only access what was available and you literally pulled out all the stops. What seemed like this teen not engaging was in fact immense fear hence, as Mike spotted, trying to engineer his own pathway by wreaking havoc, at the times when he was partially 'with it' enough to determinedly attempt to do so, but .... ultimately ... deep down.... feeling remorse. Anyway, from the bottom of my heart you two, thank you. And for penning and sharing this story 💕

Applause for best efforts from Casey and Mike. Desperately tragic situation for the boy.

This book would’ve been really enjoyable but the narrator is absolutely awful, sorry, I’ve looked through other books by this author but they have the same narrator so I won’t be buying anymore, sorry but it spoilt the book for me.

Awful narrator
