As a non-addict, I loved the first chapter, which gave me an insight into substance misuse. This set the foundation for the rest of the book, which takes you through many techniques, starting with those suited to people in the early stages of recovery and progressing to tactics for living a long and meaningful life. This felt very poignant given the introduction, which mentioned some people by name who hadn't made it, as well as many who had. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who wants to support an addict as they become sober.

I listened to this because I wanted a clearer picture of how recovery affects everyone involved, and it honestly helped a lot. The way the ideas were explained made things feel more human and less confusing. I liked that it talked about the struggles without judging anyone.

I read Breaking Free From Addiction as a man who appreciates straight talk and practical structure, especially on a topic that’s so easy to drown in shame or vague motivation. What I liked immediately is that it treats addiction as what it is—something complex and chronic—not a moral failure. That framing matters, because it takes the “I’m broken” narrative down a notch and replaces it with something more workable: understanding triggers, patterns, and the real mechanics of recovery.

The book also feels useful because it doesn’t only speak to the person struggling—it also explains how the people around them can help without accidentally making things worse. The boundary and “support without enabling” guidance is clear and grounded, and the checklists/scripts make it easier to know what to say and what to avoid when emotions are high. I also appreciated the way it talks about relapse: not as a full defeat, but as something you plan for, learn from, and respond to with a safer, more realistic mindset.

This isn’t a miracle cure, and I wouldn’t treat any book as a replacement for professional treatment or therapy if that’s needed. But as a steady, practical guide—one you can return to when things get hard—it offers real tools, a clear framework, and a hopeful tone that doesn’t feel judgmental. Overall, it’s the kind of book that can help someone feel less lost and more equipped to take the next right step.
