About this listen

The first gritty thriller in the Avison Fluke series by M. W. Craven, the acclaimed author of The Puppet Show.

Detective Inspector Avison Fluke is a man on the edge. He has committed a crime to get back to work, concealed a debilitating illness and is about to be made homeless.

Just as he thinks things can't get any worse, the body of a young woman is found buried on a Cumbrian building site.

Shot once in the back of the head, it is a cold, calculated execution. When the postmortem reveals she has gone to significant expense in disguising her appearance, Fluke knows this is no ordinary murder.

With the help of a psychotic ex-Para, a gangland leader and a woman more interested in maggots than people, Fluke must find out who she was and why she was murdered before he can even think about finding her killer.

Critic reviews

"Deeply layered, fiendishly clever and absorbing." (Matt Hilton, author of the Joe Hunter series)

Superb characters in a plot that’s twisty and surprising yet easy to follow. I only wish there were more than 2 Avison Fluke books.

Gripping

This book had made me want to visit Cumbria! Not the sleazy estates but the cabins in the outdoors, and I’m a city girl. Wasn’t sure if I was going to warm to Avison Fluke after Washington Poe but I did. Brilliantly narrated and a great crime story, with twist and turns I never saw coming .

Another great story

Prefer the characters in this to the Poe series. Cracking story which is read extremely well.

Really enjoyed this

Great story though I thought giving him the same similarities as Poe....ie wanting to live in the middle of nowhere and being averse to rules was a bit lame. However I forgave the author and I'm looking forward to the next book!!!

A new character after the excellent Washington Poe

Very enjoyable as a story to have in the background whilst pottering around the house. I did guess who the killer was, but enjoyed the story as it unfolded. Some interesting characters I am looking forward to meeting again.

enjoyable but predictable
