The affluent seaside resort of Smalting is unaccustomed to crime. So when human remains are found beneath the floorboards of a beach hut, the community is awash with suspicion. Amateur sleuths Carole Seddon and best friend Jude are drawn into the mystery, and their suspicion quickly falls on attractive Philly Rose, a young Londoner newly arrived in the area, whose boyfriend has recently vanished.

Meanwhile, Kelvin Southwest, caretaker of Smalting’s beach huts, seems to be hiding a dark secret while Reginald Flowers, pompous president of the Smalting Beach Hut Association, becomes increasingly defensive about his own history. When the bones under the beach hut are identified, the ghosts of the past are painfully reawakened, and long-hidden secrets begin to surface.

Good to see the ongoing relationship with Carol and Jude and the lives of the Feathering community. I was left feeling very uncomfortable with the way the child abuse issue was dealt with. Don't feel it was addressed seriously and the idea that other children and 'saved' because others are abused is a dangerous narrative.

A darker story than the other books

Good characters and an engaging plot. Very well narrated by the author - a dependable series.

Easy listen

Once again it was great to visit Feathering and meet up with two of my favourite lady sleuths, Carol and Jude. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the books in this series so far and I did enjoy this one too but.........
I hadn't expected the slightly darker subject matter which was not easy to drift off to sleep with and I didn't really feel that I learnt anything more about Carol or Jude. The gradual unfolding of their past lives and revealing of their personalities are things that really draw me to this series.
However, I look forward with pleasure to the next story.

Not my favourite

Well, actually, once you listen to it, you’ll know what I mean. As with all of these, the loose ends are all neatly tied off at the end, but it’s actually a much sadder, darker story than hitherto, with some difficult issues tackled and resolved, probably not in a way that you’d expect would satisfy Carole (in particular), but which Jude would probably tell you provided the best outcomes realistically achievable. And, as ever, extremely well narrated. Wimpishly, I’m hoping the next one will be a bit jollier…

Somehow sadder…
