About this listen

You can't drown the dead.

When the brutally murdered body of a local geography teacher is discovered at Kilwinnoch’s famous beauty spot, Blood Water Falls, the community is rocked to its core.

For DCI Duncan Bone, the killing appears to be an open and shut case. But it’s not long before a sinister clue unleashes dark and deadly forces, blowing the investigation wide open, and putting Bone and his team in grave danger.

With the town baying for blood, and too many suspects and not enough answers, DCI Bone faces not only the toughest case of his career, but the battle of his life to defeat the psychological demons determined to destroy him once and for all.

Set among the dramatic hills and glens of Scotland's Campsie Fells, Blood Water Falls is the second in a series of edge-of-your-seat crime thrillers that will keep you guessing right up to the nail-biting, heart-stopping climax.

Perfect for fans of Ian Rankin, J.D. Kirk, Val McDermid and Stuart MacBride.

Really starting to get into this DI Bone series now. Just bought book 3 and looking forward to it.

Good red herrings

An easy listen with a nice dollop of humour in the mix. Always worth a listen with good narration.

I was in two minds whether to read the second book in the series after not being very impressed with the first one. To have the main detectives targeted once may be forgiven (first book) but to have them targeted twice (this book) does stretch credibility just too far.

Just an observation but given the books are set in the present day there is little use made of technology (mobile phone location tracking, APNR cameras,
use of police radios, or even texting which gets little mention!).”Phone the station” and messages left with the desk sergeants seems bizarre. It also seems odd that, other than the desk sergeants, Bone and his team don’t seem to know the names of any of the numerous PCs they work with (or they them!).

The plot, although initially intriguing, soon deteriorated with plenty of overdone filling (eg Mullens with his father) to make up for a lack of substance. Nothing Bone or his team did seems to have helped unmask the guilty party which only happened (spoiler alert) because a relative arrived at the police station to tell them!

At least some of DCI Bone’s behaviours and dialogue are a little more credible in this book although his behaviour with the press and his boss are still ‘over the top’, totally unbelievable, and a little farcical (eg threatening the journalist in front of witnesses , assaulting the suspect during interview, etc). The author is very talented at describing and building characters just often not making them or their actions believable.

DI Walker is, in my view, the more interesting and credible character and it’s a shame the books weren’t based on her!

I’m not sure I’ll risk any more in the series.

Very disappointed!
