The Backrooms began as internet horror: endless yellow rooms, damp carpet, fluorescent buzzing, and the terrifying idea that someone could slip out of reality and land somewhere they were never meant to be.
But is that fear really new?
In this episode, we explore the Backrooms as modern folklore — a digital-age version of much older stories about thin places, fairy mounds, haunted thresholds, time slips, caves, and other worlds hidden just beneath our own. From Gettysburg ghost stories to Saint Patrick’s Purgatory, King Herla, and real cave isolation experiments, we look at why certain places feel wrong, why time seems to bend underground, and why humans have always feared the spaces between worlds.
