October 2018. A rundown motor lodge on the outskirts of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Luna checks in late, exhausted from a long drive. The night clerk warns her about the man in room 13, but not why. All night, she hears the door across the hall open and close, open and close — always at odd intervals, always with no footsteps. She looks through the peephole and sees nothing. But the door is moving on its own, swinging gently as if someone just walked through. She never learns who — or what — is in room 13. The next morning, the clerk says no one has stayed in that room in years.
