Before Hannibal's elephants thundered across the Alps, Carthage fielded another legendary force: the Sacred Band, an elite corps of heavy infantry numbering perhaps 2,500 men, recruited from the highest ranks of Punic aristocracy. Bound by oaths and honor, these soldiers fought in the front lines, wielding long spears and round shields, their armor glinting with the symbols of Tanit and Baal Hammon. Created in the 4th century BCE, the Sacred Band mirrored the Greek Theban Sacred Band but with a distinctly Phoenician character. Their most famous commander was Hamilcar Barca, Hannibal's father, who led them at the Battle of Bagradas River (240 BCE) during the Mercenary War, where they held the line against rebel forces. Later, under Hasdrubal the Fair, they garrisoned the new capital Qart Hadasht in Iberia. By the time of the Second Punic War, the Sacred Band had faded, its elite warriors absorbed into Hannibal's multi-ethnic army. This episode explores their training, weaponry, battle record, and the political symbolism of an aristocratic corps in a merchant republic. We also discuss the fragmentary evidence from Polybius and Diodorus Siculus, and the modern debate over whether the Sacred Band was a fixed unit or a fluid honor guard. Along the way, we touch on Carthage's eclectic military system—Numidian cavalry, Celtic mercenaries, Libyan spearmen—and how the Sacred Band fit into that mosaic. #Carthage #SacredBand #Punic #HamilcarBarca #HasdrubalTheFair #MercenaryWar #BagradasRiver #QartHadasht #Polybius #DiodorusSiculus #Tanit #BaalHammon #Phoenician #AncientWarfare #EliteTroops #Barcid #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
