October 22nd, 2:14 AM. A call comes in from a payphone at a flooded church in the town of Grissom's Bend. The line is crackling, underwater-sounding. A woman's voice, calm and precise, says she's standing in the bell tower of St. Elian's Chapel, which was submerged when the reservoir was dammed in 1979. Luna takes the call. She knows the chapel never had a bell tower. The woman laughs — a wet, gurgling sound — and says the water has its own music now, and it's learning the phones. By the time Luna traces the line, the payphone at the old marina is ringing, and when she picks up, she hears her own voice from three hours ago, still talking.
