About this listen
The “butterfly people” refers to stories that emerged after the devastating 2011 EF5 tornado in Joplin, Missouri. 1,150 people injured. Over 158 killed. Survivors reported mysterious strangers — often dressed in white or appearing suddenly — helping pull people from rubble, giving aid, even flying them to heaven, and then disappearing without anyone being able to identify them afterward.
Some interpret these accounts as something explainable and grounded in reality, while others view them as folklore that grew out of trauma, chaos, and the human need to find meaning in disaster. Some swear with everything they have that the creatures were real. Either way, the stories became a modern “guardian angel” legend tied to one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history. But is it truly supernatural?
