About this listen

Jason logs into Awaken Online fed-up with reality. He's in desperate need of an escape, and this game is his ticket to finally feeling the type of power and freedom that are so sorely lacking in his real life.

Awaken Online is a brand new virtual reality game that just hit the market, promising an unprecedented level of immersion. Yet Jason quickly finds himself pushed down a path he didn't expect. In this game, he isn't the hero. There are no damsels to save. There are no bad guys to vanquish.

In fact, he might just be the villain.

I was on the look out for a book like this, I really enjoy mmorpgs and also love reading works of fiction around the themes

A great listen!

Almost, but not quite Ready Player One goodness. Still, 8.5/10 overall - which may be harsh, considering I hacked through this in 3 days (and about the download book 2)!
Plenty of 'LOL' moments (Ice mage going OTT, leaving everyone, including the mage, slipping all over the place being a personal favourite). Could have gone a little further on the tech side, and a common issue with transference to audible is the long, repetitive list of game stats. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed this.
The narrator has a great voice and pace, although his character range wasn't fantastic, and I thought some of the emotions weren't narrated as they were described, but I'd still give him a solid 7.5/10.

Almost, but not quite Ready Player One goodness.

I loved this book, its brilliantly written, The main characters have plenty of depth to them. The narration is superb and faultless.
The world building is great, as is the whole concept.
As a LITRPG its right up there I would most definitely recommend this to anyone.

Amazing

I loved the story, but the pronunciation of some of the words was incorrect (trebuchet nearly had me to the point of stopping listening to the whole thing) and there was little distinction between the sounds of different characters. I'm sure the narrator is very talented, but there were quite a few issues with the narration. I will keep getting them because I'm hooked on the story.

great story, but only so so narration

Having been a fan of MMORPG's growing up, this book reminds me of what it was like playing those games. This book was a good substitute to playing the games, and the story is similar to an epic quest you might get as the main character.
I've rated the story 4/5 as the antagonist's background and purpose is nothing special and somewhat predictable, and further lacks the deep character building that other books in the genre have. That said, the protagonists are well developed, each with their own characters and traits.
The performance I have only rated 3/5, as while the words are clear, the narrator speaks too slowly, and the pronunciation of certain words (e.g. trebuchet pronounced as tre-bu-chet) were particularly galling!
I have since purchased and listened to the rest of the series, and the story does get better with more character development. However, the narrator rating remains the same.

Great story, but slow narrator.
