Summary

“Old-school creepy… a five-star horror novel.” STEPHEN KING

A mind-bending speculative thriller in which the sudden appearance of a mountain in the middle of the Pacific Ocean leads a group of scientists to a series of jaw-dropping revelations that challenge the notion of what it means to be human.

IF YOU EVER READ THIS,

TELL OTHERS.

DON’T COME HERE.

When a mountain mysteriously appears in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a group of scientists are sent to investigate.

Explorer Harry Tunmore agrees to join the secret mission – and he has his own reasons beyond scientific curiosity . . .

But the higher the team ascend, the stranger things become. Time moves differently. Memories of their lives before the mountain begin to fade.

What, or who, will they discover at the top?

An interesting sci-fi with a few fresh ideas. Echoing elements of other genre classics but from a different angle. Another review mentions ‘Arrival on Steroids’, which is what actually made me decide to read this because I’m a fan of the film however I found this story lacking in the subtlety, impact and ‘big reveal’ of Arrival. It is certainly an intellectual piece of fiction, drawing on lots of different sources. The author has done considerable research. I thought that some of the descriptions were extremely realistic, which made me think more than once that the author must have lived those particular details e.g. the frostbite or the emotions associated with trauma. On the other hand, some things didn’t ring true such as the protagonist’s motives for writing letters to his estranged niece when he could barely keep a relationship with those he shared a house with. The protagonist is a strange and awkward character and it is difficult to feel empathy for someone so remote.
I found the opening part of the book difficult to get into. It initially seemed unrelated to the main body of the story and unnecessary. As the story developed however I thought that the religious links were surprisingly convincing in a Dan Brownesque kind of way and overall it was good fun. It would be an epic film.
Narration was a little bit odd, aloof and clipped with some sections where I either realised I’d stopped listening because it was too monotonous or missed what was said because it was too rushed. I lost interest a little at the beginning and towards the very end BUT I’d still say that this is worth a read, especially if you’re a sci-fi fan, geologist or climber.

Extremely original would love more descriptions of the environment I found I didn’t care about the characters I didn’t invest .. that being said the originality of the story with the conclusion makes up for it I’ll define read other books from the author
