About this listen

LA, 1946. Private eyes Katherine "Kit" Comfort and Henry Richman, operators of the struggling Comfort & Company detective agency, have their hands full when a simple missing person case turns into a deadly clash with traitors and killers.

While trying to locate a wayward army doctor, notorious ex-cop Henry and his ambitious young partner Kit become entangled with both a Nazi underground and the government agents who are stalking them.

Told from five points of view, After the Blue, Blue Rain takes listeners on a thrilling, sometimes heartbreaking journey through postwar Los Angeles while posing the ultimate question: What is evil?

L.A. in 1946 has put its uniform away and does not yet know what to do with its hands. Kit Comfort is new at running a detective agency in a city that is new at being at peace, and that doubling is the whole pleasure of the book. A.D. Price writes the postwar grief as weather, low and constant, and lets the case walk through it instead of around it. The chapters from inside the antagonist's head are the strangest room in the house and the one I kept wanting to go back into. Elizabeth Schmidt keeps Kit's forward lean and Henry's worn edge clean from each other across more than eight hours, and she gives the antagonist a quiet that is worse than menace would have been. That she came back to narrate Book 2 is the kind of thing that tells you what you need to know. A wet street under a neon sign, and somewhere a man who came home from the war but did not bring all of himself back.

A sharp, atmospheric dive into postwar noir, this story hooks you with a classic missing-person setup and quickly spirals into something far more sinister. The chemistry between Kit Comfort and Henry Richman carries the narrative—one driven, one haunted—both navigating a murky world where loyalties blur and danger lurks at every turn. The pacing is tight, with tension steadily building as the investigation uncovers a chilling conspiracy tied to the lingering scars of war.
