About this listen

Toby never meant to be a highway robber, but needs must. He didn’t plan to impersonate a top London valet either, but when the chance comes to present himself as the earl of Arvon’s new gentleman's gentleman, he grabs it. Unfortunately, the earl is the man he seduced and robbed on the road to get here. Oops.

Miles, Lord Arvon, is not impressed. But he’s faced with a tumbledown home and lost family fortune, and desperate times call for desperate measures. Toby—shameless, practical, and definitely desperate—may be just the man he needs.

To steal back a priceless bracelet, that is. What else were you thinking?

Short but sweet. This story was an easy listen, but understandably lacked some depth as it is novella length.

This was very cute but I found it a little boring. Would have loved a little more description.

Very cute and intriguing story. Both of the main characters were likeable and the plot had good twists.

A lot of reviewers seem to dislike the narration. It seemed fine to me, although I don't know why they thought they needed two readers. My main objection was to the writing style, which is poor. In common with a lot of fiction these days, it's dialogue-heavy, full of interminable conversations to illustrate situations that could have been described in a couple of paragraphs of prose, or more effectively "shown, not told" with scenarios that predate the main story. In short, it's over-long, a novela that would be better as a short story.

It starts well, Toby appearing to be lovable rogue with plenty of witty repartee, and seems set to develop as a lightweight, entertaining fluff of Boy's Own adventure. With added filth.

But then it seems to lose its way, getting bogged down in chapters of dialogue detailing their sad lives of neglectful upbringings, all of which is corny, unengaging and out of kilter with the sexy fun of the opening chapter. I almost gave up on it, but it does eventually pick up again. But it never recaptures the spirit of the entertaining start. As a result, what could and should have been an amusing puff piece in the style of "The Wicked Lady" is just disappointing.

It's free because you wouldn't pay for it!

This was a charming little story. At first I was a bit put off by the abrupt steamy scene right at the beginning, but when I came back to this novelette later, I ‘read’ on and found the spicy interlude was quite key to the unfolding plot. Tense excitement was a twist with a happy ending. I liked this and the steamy love scenes too.
