Critic reviews

All hail the queen of scream. A Sliver of Darkness is C.J. Tudor at her spine-tingling, nightmare-inducing best. Read it if you dare...
This unsettling collection of stories from a writer often called the 'British Stephen King' deftly inverts the banal and unremarkable to reveal their underlying horror
Beautifully barbaric, creepy as hell and crammed with barbed wit, Tudor can say more in one short story than many writers can manage in a full length novel
Brilliantly creepy and perfectly executed
A decadent and phantasmagorical descent into the dark chasm where I first fell in love with horror fiction. Told with real heart along with daemonic savagery, these are stories to luxuriate with in the tenebrous
Chilling

Not C.J. Tudor’s usual excellent work in my opinion. 1 or 2 memorable stories, yet a couple others maybe not so memorable.

Wouldn’t knock it too much though, particularly as the rest of her books have been gold.

Looking forward The Drift just as much as before.

A sliver of the Tudor’s usual great work.

I didn’t realise it was a collection of short stories when I downloaded it, a very pleasant surprise! Great collection of darkness and light! Thanks CJ for another great distraction.

I love this author!

I like short stories and love C.J. Tudor. A couple of the stories weren’t amazing, but the majority were great!
Good performances too!

I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but I'll try anything once; and A Sliver of Darkness by C.J. Tudor certainly had my curiosity. The first two stories were engaging and well written, and The Block in particular stood out as a genuinely creepy and memorable tale. Tudor's writing style is strong and atmospheric, and she clearly knows how to build tension and unease.

That said, as someone who prefers full-length novels, I found it difficult to stay fully invested. I like to really get absorbed in the world I'm reading about or listening to, and these short bursts didn't give me enough time to do that. After a few stories, I found my attention slipping, even with earbuds in. It's not a reflection of the author’s talent; just a mismatch between the format and my personal reading taste.

Overall, I've given this book three stars because there were definitely some stories I enjoyed, especially early on. But if, like me, you tend to prefer novels where you can sink into the world and characters, this collection might not hold your attention for long. However, if you enjoy dark, bite-sized tales with a twist, you'll likely get much more out of A Sliver of Darkness than I did.

For those who love a short story with bite

I like this author and have several of her books safe in my archive to listen again. Short stories are often a can of worms but she manages to hold interest but I really do prefer her novels. Worth a listen - but only once!

A mixed bag
