Traded for peace. Sacrificed to a monster.
Maia Fremont just wanted a chance. When the opportunity to create floral arrangements for the royal wedding is offered to her, who is she to say no? But the crown is never honest, and soon enough, she finds herself thrust into an unwanted union with a fearsome troll. Ripped from her beloved garden and the only life she's ever known, she's offered as a bride to a creature she's only heard whispers of—rumors of brutality, darkness, and insatiable hunger.
Ragnar, a powerful troll healer, is disgusted by the human king's deception. His duty to his people forces him to accept this lie of a marriage. His bride is a fragile human instead of the strong half-elfen mate he expected. Her meager magic is an insult, but honor and allegiance bind him to her. No matter how much he hates it.
Married to a beast who sees her as nothing more than a tool to strengthen his bloodline, Maia must fight for her life in the treacherous world of the trolls. But in their kingdom deep within the mountain, she must balance her growing attraction for her gruff, surprisingly poetic husband against the lurking dangers in this strange new world—especially when the growing darkness threatens to tear them apart.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
"You are not fragile because you survived being broken."
Listening to A Darkness So Sweet on audio was utterly intoxicating. The moment Nina Yndis and Will Thorne began to speak, the mountain kingdom unfurled around me—lush and dangerous—and I genuinely could not stop listening. Their performances breathe such vivid life into every glance, every growl, every fragile confession that the story became impossible to step away from.
But as spellbinding as the narration is, none of it would have hit so deeply without Emma Hamm’s masterful writing. The prose is rich and immersive, balancing tenderness with brutality, softness with scorching desire. Every scene feels layered with emotion, and the romance blooms so naturally amidst the darkness that it completely consumed me.
Maia begins as sheltered and naive, yet there’s a quiet steel inside her that slowly ignites the deeper she’s pulled into troll society. Watching her find strength, purpose, and a true sense of home was beautiful. And Ragnar? Gods, I adored him. A monstrous force on the battlefield, yet utterly reverent towards his wife in private. The way he worshipped Maia—fiercely, protectively, tenderly—made it impossible for me not to fall for him completely.
Verdict: This story delivers everything. Aching vulnerability, political tension, magic, swooning devotion, and spice hot enough to melt stone. One moment my heart was cracking open, the next I was grinning like a fool, and the ending left me desperate for more.
Totally intoxicating
