Living with three powerful demons is not easy, especially when they’re dead set on making you theirs.
Charlotte’s life was decided for her the moment she was born, but now she’s faced with the opportunity to change the fate of millions of purchased females—and the generations to follow. Her males have agreed to fight to free her kind, righting the mistake they made so many years ago.
Thrust into a world of politics and nuances too subtle to understand, Charlotte quickly learns the truth is never what it seems. Lies and deceit pull her in different directions, and she soon begins questioning who she can trust.
Charlotte finds herself navigating alliances and broken promises with the strongest rulers of the realms, all while discovering who she is beyond just a purchased female.

This book had me screaming!

Firstly, I have to preface my review with a note that I am ignoring the spicy scenes in this review. They are really quite good and are not reflected in this review because I don't feel they are story-relevant. The scenes in that sense are just there for enjoyment of the reader/listener and have no real bearing (mostly) on the story. If I were to rate the book simply based on those, my rating might be higher.
So this story continues where it left off from the first book, but the character development takes a few confusing turns. There is a lot of discontinuity in how the characters act. For example, these 1000-year-old demons don't really act like they have that wealth of experience. It is a hard balance to find between characters the reader can relate to and ones which have so many lifetimes of experience that we might not comprehend them fully, and many authors do not achieve it. The main female character is also very child-like, which is explained by her upbringing/ experiences, but there is a difference between naivety and a lack of intelligence. She is described as being intelligent and quick to learn and understand, but does not act like this at all. One of the demon men goes from disinterest to full-on-head-over-heels in what feels like less than a page, which is very jarring because we have no context for his change of mind. The development of the king of the demon realm was more satisfying, though I feel like it could have been drawn out better by more POV scenes from him to understand his shift in how he perceives the female character and his intentions.
The author has created an interesting universe, with all the different fantasy species/ races, but doesn’t utilise it fully and this is a shame. We do get to see much more of this universe compared to the first book, but it feels rushed. They also seem to forget their own lore. So for example, the demons have incredible hearing and the demon men can hear the woman breathing from across the mansion, but she can apparently sneak up on a demon queen having a meeting enough to overhear the conversation? It doesn’t fully make sense.
Unfortunately, as with the first book, the narrator's natural (?) vocal style and cadence makes the female character sound pouty, spoiled, and entitled, which really adds further to my feeling of disinterest in the female main character. Her performance is actually quite good, but her style really doesn’t help the character or the story.
Inconsistent and disappointing, but worth a listen
