The plan was to fix up the farmhouse, sell it, and leave. Then I met Drew...and his cat Bodhi.

I’m a stranger in this place. When a car accident nearly killed me, Mom took me away from my father and this small Texas town. Now, I’m back, and while everyone seems to remember the little girl I used to be, no one knows the woman I’ve become. That’s okay. I’m not here to reconnect or fix what’s broken between my father and me. I’m just here to fix the house I inherited, sell it, and go.

Then I meet Bodhi, the three-legged cat who keeps peeing on my porch. And along comes Bodhi’s dad, Drew, the protective firefighter with rough hands, a smooth smile, and such a dirty mouth.

Drew has a reputation for rescuing strays. Is that what I am, another stray for him to rescue? Or this time, maybe I'll be the rescuer.

Hearts on Fire is a sexy, full-length, small town romance featuring a cat dad firefighter and a feisty heroine. It is Book One of the Hearts of Texas series.

Christina Berry’s “Lost in Austin” series is one of my favorite series, and I was happy to learn more of her books were coming to audio and was looking forward to listening to them. “Hearts on Fire,” the first book of her “Hearts of Texas” series, shows another side of her brilliant and creative mind and gifted way with words in this small-town romance that contains the perfect balances of humor, heart, and heat. I adored the two lead characters, Chloe and Drew, and the way they first met, which did not go over too well, but was a hilarious scene, thanks to Drew’s cat burglar, Bodhi, and Chloe’s uninvited guest. Chloe left her hometown with her mother when she was young and returned after inheriting her paternal grandparents’ home, a house her estranged father is trying to claim is rightfully his. She renovated homes with her mom before she passed, and she plans on renovating this house and then selling it before deciding what is next for her. Drew comes back to apologize for going off on her, and Chloe explains why she did what she did, and the two have a truce that leads to so much more. The chemistry between these two was smoking hot, and I enjoyed watching them get to know each other and seeing their relationship morph into something strong and meaningful. Both have scars from their past, and Drew was great at understanding what Chloe was dealing with, her past demons that left her with PTSD. Berry kept it real with the mental health issues, handled and presented them beautifully, and was tastefully done. This masterfully crafted, multilayered story is captivating from start to end and has the perfect balance of drama, angst, heartwarming moments, humor via witty dialogue and banter, heartfelt emotions, and steamy romance. As always, Berry’s writing, plot, and world-building are fantastic, as are the complexity of the characters, their growth and development. Thank you for another fabulous story, the laughs and the emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous audiobook listen and production performed in duet by the wonderfully talented Isabelle Turner and Aaron Shedlock. Their character voices were fitting for a perfect portrayal of each, and I loved how they took each role and made it their own, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters would sound. Turner was a natural in Chloe’s role, grasping every aspect of her personality, from her sassy wit to her vulnerabilities to her strength and determination. Shedlock did the same as Drew and was just as amazing at showcasing his personality and demeanor perfectly. Both were fantastic at performing the roles of the side/secondary characters too. They handled the witty dialogue and banter effortlessly, and their expressive delivery conveyed all the characters’ emotions, making you feel each one. These two are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to, and their captivating performance keeps you hooked to the story.
